  1. In computing, a program that mimics a sheet
  2. of ruled paper, divided into columns and
  3. rows. The user enters values in the sheet,
  4. then instructs the program to perform some
  5. operation on them, such as totalling a column
  6. or finding the average of a series of
  7. numbers. Highly complex numerical analyses
  8. may be built up from these simple steps.
  9. Spreadsheets are widely used in business for
  10. forecasting and financial control. The first
  11. spreadsheet program, VisiCalc, appeared 1979.
